Who is a “Heritage Learner”?

A "Heritage Learner" is someone who has been exposed to Arabic during childhood, often in a familial context, but has not attained the fluency or literacy of a native Arabic speaker. These learners may not use Arabic as their primary language and often lack full literacy in it. While their understanding of Arabic may be passive—they can comprehend the language without being able to communicate effectively—they may have limited exposure to various cultural contexts. Their fluency can vary significantly, typically revolving around everyday topics. The distinction between Spoken Arabic (‘Ammiyya) and Modern Standard Arabic (Fusha) further complicates their learning experience, as Fusha is usually acquired through formal education.

Prerequisites

For general learners of Arabic, there are no prerequisite conditions required. Anyone can start learning Arabic regardless of their background or prior knowledge. All what is needed is a willingness to engage with the language and a desire to learn. Leave the rest on us.
